KNX Hero: Rescuing and rehabilitating stray cats and dogs

Our KNX Hero of the Week, Christine Brown, is rescuing many of our four-legged friends with her non-profit.

For Brown, a love of horses turned into a passion to help animals of all sizes.

“I started volunteering at the South L.A. shelter in 2009,” she told Heroes host Heather Jordan.”I just saw a tremendous need.”

In 2014, Brown founded Animals In Need Rescue Network, which offers an array of services from trap, neuter, and return to helping stray dogs and cats with medication and rehabilitation. They also have a large network of volunteers who help find foster homes, aid with transportation and rescue operations, fundraising, and more.

“We primarily rescue cats and kittens off the streets and from shelters, and from people who can no longer keep their cats,” she said. “We also rescue dogs, and I have a rescue horse under my rescue as well.”

Brown, who also serves as executive director, added that since December of 2020, they’ve also been doing mobile spay-neuter clinics.

We have fixed 33,700 cats,” she said. “We're currently doing 6 clinics a month. We are able to fix 35 at each one. We fix, spay, neuter, vaccinate, and provide them with flea meds and it's free for the volunteers that are bringing cats to our clinics.”

Brown said it’s important to take care of animals because they teach us about unconditional love, and that they give us so much.
