LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday California would lift its indoor masking requirements for public spaces beginning Feb. 15, citing a nationwide drop in COVID-19 cases.

But L.A. County officials have said they intend to keep indoor mask rules in place beyond that date, as they wait for hospitalizations to dip below 2,500 over the course of a week and case counts to drop to 50 new cases per 100,000 county residents.

The county reported 2,773 hospitalizations on Monday. For the week ending on Jan. 31, the county reported 193 cases per 100,000 residents.

“This is not the right time to stop wearing our masks when around others indoors, and in outdoor crowded settings,” L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer contended at a news briefing last week.

“We’re not they’re yet,” she said.
