Los Angeles City Council members are bringing in outside help to tackle a payroll problem that’s been shorting pay for many of the city’s first responders.

This has been an ongoing problem for several months. Some L.A. police officers and firefighters have been getting paychecks that are less than they should be. KNX News’ Craig Fiegener reported that City Controller Kenneth Mejia said the problem is being caused by the migration to a new software known as Workday.

Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez told Fiegener the problem needs to be fixed soon.

“It is unfathomable to me that we are not doing everything we can to make sure that at least their paychecks are 100% accurate,” she said.

For some people, their paychecks are short by pennies an hour. For others, it’s dollars an hour.

“I think that right now the main issue is the transfer into this new payday system, but that's not all the issues that are at hand, and that's why we put in the second call to figure out what are the additional issues that are coming up that we need to address that are outside of this Workday system,” Hernandez said.

The City council voted this week to embed a software expert from Workday to assist city payroll staff in figuring out exactly what the cause of this problem is and then report back to the council with a solution.

There was a delay in implementing a 6% pay raise for rank-and-file LAPD cops in November that resulted in the police officer union suing the city controller.
