VIDEO: L.A. police release footage in shooting of man suspected to have gun

LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Los Angeles Police Department released video of an officer-involved shooting that happened in the Newton area in late March.

Around 7:00 p.m. on March 29, officers responded to call of assault with deadly weapon in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Avalon Boulevard. It was reported the suspect was pointing a gun at drivers passing by and people in the area.

At one point in the video, the suspect, identified as Jose Barrera, 45, is seen outside a building pointing an object as if it’s gun; however, it’s unclear what exactly is in his hand.

Body camera footage shows officers responding to the incident. A voice on the radio claims Barrera had a gun in his hand and fired shots at a house.

The officer who is wearing body camera opens the car door while the car is still in motion and fires shots. She is then seeing approaching the suspect, yelling, “Let me see your hands!”

Another piece of body cam footage shows Barrera on the ground as officers arrest him.

Barrera was taken to the hospital and treated for the gunshot wound before being taken into custody.
He was booked for assault with a deadly weapon involving a firearm.

A firearm has not been located the scene at this time, the department said.
