LOS ANGELES (KNX) – LA Metro’s Regional Connector, which will allow riders to travel between Azusa and Long Beach and East L.A. and Santa Monica without transferring, opened on Friday.

Matt Antonelli, the project manager of the Regional Connector, said the new project minimizes transfers.

“So people that are coming to Union Station, for example, that won't normally go down and get on the B line or D line can now stay on the train and really access the heart of downtown Los Angeles and it allows the people of downtown to really go any direction north, south, east or west,” he said.

Three new stations also opened that will make the transfer-free rides possible - the Little Tokyo/Arts District Station, Historic Broadway Station, and the Grand Avenue Arts/Bunker Hill Station. Those stations allow A (Blue) Line and E (Expo) Lines trains to continue through the downtown area to Union Station and beyond, according to City News Service.

LA Metro believes the new system will save riders 20 minutes per ride.

The $1.8 billion project broke ground in 2014.

In celebration of the project, LA Metro will be offering free rides from 3 a.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Monday on all Metro buses, trains, Metro Bike and Metro Micro.
