Owners who believe they lost firearms in the Palisades fire can now apply to recover them, authorities announced Wednesday.

Roughly 500 firearms were retrieved and rendered "safe" during debris removal in the burn area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Many of the weapons sustained severe fire damage, making identification difficult, police said.

Despite the condition of the firearms, LAPD officials said they were working to process and identify them properly and, when appropriate, return them to their rightful owners.

Applications are now open for community members to start the process by providing identifying information such as proof of residential address, and a description of their firearm.

The LAPD Gun Recovery Unit can be contacted at palisadesfire@lapd.online.

"We recognize that these firearms may hold significant sentimental value to their owners, whether as family heirlooms, historical pieces, or personal mementos, and we are doing our best to reunite them with their owners," said Alan Hamilton, LAPD Chief of Detectives.

Individuals wishing to report a firearm as "lost property" may file a report at any LAPD Community Police Station or online at LAPDonline.org.
