Man, 36, arrested in stabbing on South Gate bus

A 36-year-old man was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of stabbing a man on a passenger bus in South Gate on Saturday.

Edgar Espinoza was arrested by deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Transit Services Special Assignment Unit at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Irwindale passenger station.

He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and was being held without bail in connection with the stabbing that occurred at about 5:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the sheriff's department.

"The victim was transported by the Los Angeles County Fire Department to a local hospital where they were listed in stable condition," department officials said in a news release.

"I want to commend our detectives and deputies who worked tirelessly around the clock to bring this suspect into custody," Transit Services Bureau Captain Brian Jones said.

"The swift and coordinated response between Metro and our detectives highlights our strong relationship and our shared commitment to protecting the safety of our riders. I also want to extend our sincere thanks to the Los Angeles Police Department and our surrounding law enforcement agencies for their invaluable support and collaboration to search for this suspect."
