Man charged with firing BB gun at moving cars on Riverside County freeways

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KNX) — California Highway Patrol has arrested a 39-year-old man accused of firing a BB gun at moving cars on the 60 and 10 freeways in Banning Pass, causing damage and endangering drivers.

Ernesto Zevero Gonzalez of Armona was arrested and booked into Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on Friday, according to CHP. He was charged Wednesday with multiple counts of assault. He was pulled over in the area of Interstate 5 and the San Onofre scales, just south of San Clemente, thanks to witness descriptions.

Gonzalez was held in lieu of $500,000 bail, and faces four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to cause great bodily injury.

According to CHP Officer Jason Montez, Gonzalez allegedly targeted vehicles on the 60 Freeway between Cabazon and Moreno Valley, as well as motorists in the Beaumont area.

CHP reported at least four vehicles were damaged as a result of the attacks.

Authorities have not disclosed a theory as to Gonzalez’s motive.
