Massive Marina Del Rey dredging project starting Jan. 1

Removing all of the sand that has built up at the entrance to the Marina Del Rey Harbor is a big undertaking.

The sand builds up during storms and periodically has to be scooped up and removed from the area. The Army Corps of Engineers is supposed to start this process next week. KNX News’ Jon Baird spoke to Sergeant Ron Knowles, the harbor master.

“They're going to be bringing in a crane with a scissor bucket to drop into the water and lift up sand and remove the sand that has built up over the last several years,” he said.

He said people can get stuck there, and that if a boat runs aground, it can be damaged. The clean-up will take about four to five months.

“They will be conducting the dredging operation 24 hours a day,” Knowles said. “And what will happen is they'll take a bunch of the sand out, they'll put it in a scow, the tugboat will tow it out offshore and dump the sand. Then they'll bring it back in and start the whole process all over.”

The marina will not close for the dredging project, and boat owners aren’t required to move their boats out of their slips. Boats will have to sail around the crane to get in and out of the harbor.
