LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Skateboarding is one of three urban sports approved by the International Olympics Committee to join in the Initial Sports Programme of the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, possibly in a bid to attract younger viewers, according to ESPN.
Skateboarding, surfing and sport climbing, all defined by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as strongly focused on youth, were included Thursday in the IOC’s list of 28 sports in the program coming to L.A. in 2028.

All three debuted in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and have deep roots in the golden state.
“LA28’s starting sports lineup offers a fresh take, blending new Olympic sports with fan favorites,” LA28 said in a statement, with LA28 Chairperson Casey Wasserman adding that the L.A. games have always been about bringing a more fresh and youthful energy to the games.
“Los Angeles is a place unlike any other and it will be incredible to host surfing, skateboarding and climbing as iconic West Coast sports alongside Olympic fan favorites,” Wasserman said.
Friday, Olympians Sky Brown, Carissa Moore and Nathaniel Coleman released three new LA28 emblems to share with fans.
“With my ‘A’, I want people to be inspired,” Olympic bronze medalist Sky Brown said in an LA28 interview.
The pro skateboarder added that, “it’s so easy to hold yourself back from trying something if it seems scary. I want my ‘A’ to help people believe in themselves and do what they love. Then, no one can stop you.”
The full LA28 Olympic sports program will be finalized with the IOC by the end of 2023, according to LA28.
