LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (KNX) - On Friday, a group of people were paddling off Laguna Beach when they noticed something sticking out of the water.
The dolphins and birds the group had previously seen had left the area, but one creature lingered, Anne Girtz told The Orange County Register.
“I paddled over as quickly as I could,” she recalled. “I saw the dorsal and then the back tail fin doing this very rhythmic wave motion of a shark.”
Rich German, the group’s guide, said the shark was four to five feet long and appeared to take a liking to the group.
“He would not leave us alone. He kept coming right up to the board … and wouldn’t go away, like he was looking for company,” German explained to the O.C. Register.
The shark was identified by Ryan Lawler, the owner of Newport Coastal Adventure, as a blue shark.
Blue sharks, according to Oceana, are known to be “highly migratory” as they take these journeys in search of food and potential mates. Their fins are believed by experts to be used to conserve energy during their migration, as well as to ride long currents.
While most people would run away at the sight of a shark, German felt the opposite.
“I wanted to bring him home,” German joked to the newspaper. “He was incredibly curious.”
