On Monday night, the Pasadena City Council voted to formally approve a statement denouncing the immigration enforcement action in the city.

It comes after more than a dozen people were detained in three separate operations, including one near a bus stop.

“We just made a statement basically stating that, you know, our city of Pasadena, [the] police department will not be coordinating in any way with any federal agents related to immigration,” Councilmember Tyrone Hanson told KNX News’ Jon Baird. “That is solely the responsibility of the federal government t just let our residents know that they should continue to call the police if there are things in their neighborhoods [or] communities that they see out of place.”

Hanson added that he would like to see the city establish a defense fund to help immigrants facing immigration enforcement action.

But Pablo Alvarado with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network told Baird he has a list of eight different things they would like Pasadena officials to do to help the immigrant community.

“The city of Los Angeles has a very good policy in terms of how they collaborate with immigration agents with federal agents when it comes to immigration law enforcement,” he said. “We want them to adopt the ordinance in the city of Los Angeles.”

Alvarado said he doesn’t think the city of Pasadena should invest any resources that are used to deport its residents, and that police should not be asking about immigration status.
