Public's help sought in 2023 murder in Compton

L.A. County sheriff's detectives and relatives of the victim are asking the public's help Thursday identifying the suspect or suspects responsible for the 2023 shooting death of a 25-year-old man in Compton.

Rhavan Jermaine Mitchell was fatally shot around 4:15 a.m. Dec. 2, 2023, in the 1300 block of South California Avenue, according to the sheriff's department.

Sheriff's officials said several of the victim's relatives were inside a home at the time of the shooting, but were unharmed.

Surveillance footage obtained from the scene shows a possible suspect and vehicle, officials said.

Detectives believe the shooting was a targeted attack, but Mitchell was not believed to be gang-affiliated, sheriff's officials said.

Sheriff's investigators will hold a news conference Thursday with members of the victim's family to ask anyone with information to come forward.
