The city of Santa Monica is considering imposing a curfew to keep people off the beach late at night.
City spokesperson Lauren Howland said officials have grown concerned because of a string of recent crimes and injuries.
“We did have a tragic incident that involved a drunk driver that happened recently that was very upsetting to many folks, and we've had a couple of issues with, you know, maintenance workers not seeing somebody,” she told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou. “But I think it's just been kind of an ongoing concern that the council has had.”
The details are still in the works, but suggested curfew hours might run from 11 p.m. or 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Local beachgoer Eric Russell said a late-night curfew might be appropriate.
“I guess it makes sense if there was a curfew, maybe nothing too early so that way people can still enjoy, you know, the ambiance of the beach and date night things of that sort,” he said. “But maybe like 12 is a good cutoff in terms of the sandy area, because it's very dark by the water.”
Any curfew ordinance would need approval from the California Coastal Commission.
