CHINO, Calif. (KNX) — State Sen. Connie Levya (D.-Chino) announced Wednesday she could not be seeking reelection to the state legislature in November. Levya is setting her sights locally with a run for the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors instead.

Levya, a former labor leader, was elected to represent Senate District 20 in 2014. She was reelected in 2018. Both victories were by sizable margins — 62.4 and 69.5 percent respectively.

Levya announced back in December that she would run for a third and final term, citing term limits, to represent Senate District 22, which was formed from statewide redistricting in 2021. But two weeks later she backtracked, announcing she would not be running for reelection at all.

Had she successfully run for reelection, Levya would have represented a district including parts of San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties.

“After redistricting, and doing some soul-searching, I realized my heart is in San Bernardino County,” Levya told The San Bernardino Sun on Wednesday.

Consequently, Levya has her sights trained on the county’s Fourth Supervisorial District, currently occupied by Chair Curt Hagman. The district includes Chino, Chino Hills, Montclair, Ontario, and southern Upland.

“For eight years, I have never loved coming up here and leaving my family,” Levya told The Sun. “This is the right time.”

Hagman, a former Republican minority leader in the State Assembly, has already been endorsed by the rest of the board, as well as Sheriff-Coroner Shannon Dicus, San Bernardino County schools Superintendent Ted Alejandre, District Attorney Jason Anderson, and other high-level county officials.
