After the devastating Eaton and Palisades fires, Los Angeles County reassessed property values on more than 17,000 structures to lower tax bills and trigger refunds for people whose homes were damaged or destroyed.

But there’s a major hitch: thousands of those refund checks could be lost in the mail.

“The challenge is that we mail all of our documents, and these checks, to the mailing address which is on record, which is usually the physical location of the home,” L.A. County Assessor Jeffrey Prang told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian.

Prang said about 40% of wildfire victims haven’t updated their mailing address to where they’re currently living. As a result, thousands of checks are being returned undelivered.

If you’re a fire victim, make sure to update your address at assessor.lacounty.gov to make sure your refund arrives on time.

While you’re on the site, Prang also recommends signing up for the free title fraud alert system to be notified if any suspicious documents are filed in your name.
