The Broad broke ground on an expansion project Wednesday.
Edythe Broad said that the museum’s expansion “reflects our belief in the importance of art as a resource for everyone.”
“Beyond merely adding more space to the road, the new building complements the existing by adding a whole new set of experiences for visitors immersed in exploring art in its many forms,” she said.
Joanne Heyler, president of The Broad, laid out the changes coming to the museum.
“There will be 70% more gallery space to enjoy, roughly double the number of collection artworks to view and continuous temporary special exhibitions,” she said. “Visitors will encounter upper floor outdoor spaces to catch a breath of fresh air during their now somewhat longer visit to the museum. There'll be more room for in-depth single artist presentations in our galleries in the expansion.”

Broad architect Elizabeth Diller said there will also be live programming spaces “in an effort to allow more of the collection to be shown and to be shown in different ways.”
The expansion project is expected to be completed in 2028, just in time for the Olympics.
