Trial was underway in Burbank on Thursday over a Los Angeles Police officer accused of fatally shooting a 14-year-old girl shopping at a Burlington store in North Hollywood in 2021.
During opening statements on Wednesday, lawyers said Valentina Orellana-Peralta was shopping for Christmas clothes with her mom back in 2021, when she was hit by a bullet that had gone through the dressing room wall.
In 20221, the Los Angeles Police Commission ruled that Officer William Dorsey Jones, the officer accused of shooting Orellana-Peralta, was justified in firing one shot, but that the other two shots were in violation of policy.
The girl's family is seeking $100 million in damages after suing for wrongful death and negligence.
