Voting opens for San Gabriel Valley assembly district special election

LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Voting centers have opened for the Feb. 15 special election for the 49th California Assembly District in the western San Gabriel Valley.

Voting centers will be open every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for in-person voting or mail-in ballot drop-off, according to the office of Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder and Clerk. All centers will follow COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.

The special election was called by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the assembly seat previously held by Edwin Chau (D.-Arcadia), who was recently appointed to serve as a judge in L.A. County Superior Court. Chau’s former district includes the L.A. County communities of Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, SAn Marino, Temple City, along with parts of Montebello and South El Monte.

Candidates in the ring include Democrat Mike Fong, director of policy and government relations for the L.A. Department of Neighborhood Empowerment and a member of the L.A. Community College District Board of Trustees; and Republican Burton Brink, a retired L.A. County Sheriff’s Department sergeant.

Voting centers can be found online at the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder and Clerk’s website.
