A year ago, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered an opinion that reversed decades of abortion access protection established by Roe v. Wade. It was an unpopular move then and it is even more unpopular now.
Two recent polls show that a majority of Americans oppose the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision and that they think it has been bad for the country so far.
Poll results released by Marist Wednesday show that 57% of Americans oppose the conservative-leaning Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe, compared to 40% who support it.
“Public opinion has moved little on this question since the decision came down in June of 2022,” said Marist.
With the public still in opposition to this major decision, overall support for the court has continued to wane, it said. Just 39% of Americans said they have either a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court, up slightly from a low of 37% in April. Close to 60% of Americans have not very much or no confidence at all in the Supreme Court, per the poll.
Since last summer, there have also been reports on Justice Clarence Thomas’ alleged ethics violations.
A CBS News poll also released Wednesday found that 57% of Americans believe the overturning of Roe has been bad for the country.
“When Roe v. Wade was struck down a year ago, most Americans disapproved, and today, most feel that decision turned out to be a bad thing for the country generally, because they feel an increased threat to women's health and rights,” said the outlet. “Half tell CBS News that abortion access in the U.S. has become more restricted over the past year than they expected.”
Of those who think the decision has been bad for the nation, 86% said it has put the health and lives of women more at risk, 81% said it has taken a constitutional right taken away and 78% believe states are making abortion access harder.
“More than half of women think being pregnant in the U.S. today is becoming more dangerous from a health care perspective,” said CBS. Overall, 53% of women said it is more dangerous – 71% of Democrat women think so, as well as 26% of Republican women. Only 28% of Republican women think pregnancy is safer than before Dobbs.
At the same time, some Americans do support the court’s decision, including Republicans, conservatives, and evangelicals. Those who are in favor of the Dobbs decision believe the unborn are being protected (86%) that conservative values are being recognized (63%) and that states are making abortion access harder (63%).
Most women (52%) believe that Dobbs was a step backwards for women’s rights.
