In November, Twitter confirmed that President-elect Joe Biden will take charge of the official @POTUS Twitter handle when he is sworn into office on January 20.
This week, the social media site has said that it will wipe out all followers of the account when it archives President Donald Trump’s official account as @POTUS45 and turns over the @POTUS handle to President-elect Biden. Twitter said Tuesday that all existing followers of the @POTUS account will have the option to re-follow the new one, used by President-elect Biden.
President-elect Biden’s team is fighting the decision, pushing back via email.
The @POTUS handle has only existed since 2015, during former President Barack Obama’s second term. When President Trump took office the handle changed hands but kept its over 13 million followers.
