Biden's approval dips to all-time low – does it open the door for Trump 2024?

President Joe Biden’s approval rating has dropped to just 44 percent according to a national poll conducted on Wednesday and Thursday by Reuters/Ipsos.

This online poll garnered 1,005 responses from 442 Democrats and 360 Republicans.

“It has a credibility interval, a measure of precision, of 4 percentage points,” said Reuters.

Results showed that 50 percent of people polled disapproved of Biden and others were not sure. Americans appear to be critical of the president’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, said Reuters.

However, it was the collapse of the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan and Taliban takeover of that country as U.S. troops were pulled out from nearly 20 years of occupation last month that triggered Biden’s declining popularity, said the outlet. At the same time, COVID-19 deaths were increasing around the nation due to the highly contagious Delta variant of the novel coronavirus.

While Republicans have criticized Biden’s pandemic mitigations – which include vaccination and masking requirements – most Americans actually support these orders, Reuters said.

Even as most Americans support the mitigation measures, this week’s poll showed that the overall approval rating for Biden’s pandemic response slipped below 50 for the first time. At 49 percent, more Americans still approve of his response than the 46 percent who don’t.

Biden’s numbers also outpace approval ratings for former President Donald Trump at the same stage in his presidency. Only 38 percent of Americans approved of Trump’s performance at that time, compared to 57 percent who disapproved.

Do the recent poll results indicate Trump could have a chance at winning another term if he runs against Biden in 2024?

An Emerson College Poll conducted earlier this month did show Trump narrowly beating Biden 47 to 46 percent in a ballot test. Yet, a CNN poll conducted Aug. 3 to Sept. 7 and released Wednesday showed that 63 percent of Americans believe that Biden legitimately won the 2020 election, while Trump continues to claim that election fraud cost him his second term.

Trump has hinted at a 2024 presidential run and appeared at campaign-style rallies throughout the summer, but he has not officially announced whether he intends to run for another term.
