The U.S. government will now use the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas to hold up to 3,000 immigrant teenagers.

The Associated Press says this comes as sharply higher numbers of border crossings have severely strained the current capacity to hold teens.

The downtown convention center in Dallas will be used for up to 90 days beginning as early as this week. Federal agencies will reportedly use the facility to house boys ages 15 to 17.

The move comes after border patrol is being overwhelmed by illegal immigrants pouring across the US Mexico border.

Border Patrol agents are generally supposed to detain children for no more than three days, but because there is no space they are having to find other facilities.

Border agents are apprehending more than 400 children a day on average.

The Dallas convention center site will reportedly be used as a "decompression center.''
