The image of a woman sitting on a bench with two garbage bags at her feet went viral Wednesday, after it was discovered that the bags contained the body of the woman’s brother.

"It is outrageous for anyone to receive such treatment," activist Lenit Enríquez, from the collective Mothers in Search Coatzacoalcos told Telemundo.

"The family needs a public apology, it deserves a public apology and also a criminal action is necessary because these people cannot continue working like this in this way," says Enríquez.

The Aguirre family began looking for Heladio, after he disappeared on a visit to his son in Veracruz. He was on his way back to Cancun and never returned.

Sadly, his mother found his body in the Tonalá River after receiving an anonymous tip.

Authorities began an investigation and confirmed the body was in fact Heladio. The family was notified and the body was returned in garbage bags.

"The bags were lowered on the sidewalk; then, they could not bear the smell or I don't know why if it gave off a smell they brought them from one office to another. And they came out and handed them on me. Just 'here’s your relative ma’am’,” Natalia Aguirre, Heladio’s sister tells Telemundo.

A criminal complaint was filed by the family.
