Tech billionaire Elon Musk took the stage at Capital One Arena on Monday to celebrate the inauguration of President Donald Trump – and he marked the victory with not one, but two straight-armed salutes commonly associated with Nazi Germany.
“Some elections are, you know, important. Some are not. But this one, this one really mattered, and I just want to say thank you for making it happen,” Musk said, punctuating the remark by shooting up his right hand at a diagonal angle.
He then turned around and repeated the gesture to the crowd standing behind him.
Musk has often allied himself with far-right groups, including endorsing the ethnonationalist Alternative for Germany party just last month. The party has been criticized for its ties to neo-Nazis.
He’s also come under fire for transforming X, formerly Twitter, into a right-wing “echo chamber” and a hotbed of racist conspiracy theories.
