(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As artificial Intelligence continues to change the job hunting process, Rob Barnett — a longtime media executive-turned-recruiter — joined the WBBM Noon Business Hour to spell out how applicants can make their resume stand out.
One of the challenges may be the dancing through whichever artificial intelligence algorithm that many human resources departments use to filter resumes, which Barnett said requires tailoring a resume and cover letter to make sure it lines up with most of the requirements in the listing. The best bet, he added, is to find the human behind the human behind the AI.
“You've got to spend some time going onto LinkedIn, which is really the main place you want to be, and try to invite as many people who work at that company to connect with you directly,” he said.
Then, Barnett said job-seekers have to do their homework on the business and cater a cover letter to the potential employer. He said that sends a message that “you’ve taken the time” to figure out who they are and what they’re all about.
As for knowing when a job is worth applying for in the first place, Barnett said a simply rule can give applicants a good chance to bear the algorithm.
“We advise people to use the 75-25 rule; You’ve got to be able to check 75% of the boxes of the requirements on these job descriptions, or else constant uploading of resumes is really not going to get you anywhere,” he said.
