With their innovative new artificial intelligence-powered chat app under fire because it’s apparently too good at mimicking actual human language patterns, OpenAI launched a new tool on Tuesday designed to help teachers and professors decide if a student’s work was actually composed by a computer.

ChatGPT is currently free for everyone to try out because the app is still in its research and feedback-collection phase, and people have flocked to try it out in the past two months.

It didn’t take long before students realized that ChatGPT could be used to help them answer questions on take-home tests and compose essays, the latter being a feature openly advertised as a use of the app.

Apparently OpenAI heard the ensuing uproar from educators. On Tuesday they launched AI Text Classifier. This new app is meant to help humans determine whether something was written by artificial intelligence.

However, the app is “imperfect and it will be wrong sometimes,” the company cautions. “Because of that, it shouldn’t be solely relied upon when making decisions,” OpenAI’s Jan Leike added.

ChatGPT remains open and free for usage for the time being. It can be accessed at its website.
