LOS ANGELES (KNX) – While Costco’s Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken is considered a classic, a Michelin-starred chef said the dish left a bad taste in his mouth.

David Chang, who founded the restaurant Momofuku Ko, called the food item “inedible” on his podcast, "The Dave Chang Show.”

“I think the Costco chicken is the worst rotisserie chicken,” he said, adding that the chicken is not seasoned.

“The reason why it’s important to have it properly seasoned is, you might eat it the next day cold, and it’s got to taste good cold,” he explained.  “There’s something about all the nitrates and all the crap they pump into the chicken that makes the chicken breast even more disgusting the next day when it’s cold."

Costco lists the chicken’s seasoning on the package as “salt, sodium phosphates, modified food starch, sugar, dextrose, chicken broth, isolated soy protein lecithin and mono-and-diglycerides.”

Chang’s criticism left some social media users heated.

“David Chang is the same guy who threw a fit because non-Korean people are enjoying eating/cooking Korean food. And the same guy who refused to eat donkey on China, despite it being culturally popular,” one user wrote. “Go get your Costco chicken, who gives a s**t.”

“Mr. Chang needs to read the room. For many people, this product is an affordable building block for family meal prep,” another user pointed out. “It’s not supposed to “taste good cold” it’s not gourmet.”

Chang did mention his favorite store-brought rotisserie chicken comes from Los Angeles-area based grocery chain, Sprouts.
