Wendy’s offers $1 Frosty to troll McDonald’s

McDonald’s may be America’s favorite fast food chain, but if there’s one major gripe about what happens underneath the golden arches, it’s about ice cream. Or, more specifically, how often frozen treats are unavailable.

For example, Audacy reported on one Saturday in 2022 that close to 11% of all McDonald’s ice cream machines in the country were down. We cited McBroken.com, a website dedicated to tracking whether McDonald’s ice cream machines across the country are broken or not.

Machines are still often out of commission from 11 a.m. through 3 p.m.

This week, Wendy’s announced that it was partnering with McBroken to offer the Frosty Fix – frozen treats for just $1 – through Monday. They found that Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles have the worst luck finding operating machines and need the Frosty Fix most.

Anyone disappointed by a broken McDonald’s machine just needs to pull up the Wendy’s app and find their nearest location to get the deal.

“Wendy’s fans can count on the Frosty when they need it most, available in Classic Chocolate Frosty and Vanilla Frosty – back for a limited time!” said the fast food chain in a press release.

Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas contacted Fred Kappus, CEO of Kappus Company in Ohio, in the 1960s looking for a frozen treat. Kappus pitched the Frosty, which was based on malts sold at a local race track. Vanilla was mixed in with chocolate to give it a smooth flavor.

Over the past decades, the Frosty has become a fan favorite. Some people even like to dip their Wendy’s fries in them.

“Using data from McBroken.com, Wendy’s saw that dessert fans are faced with ice cream machine outages all too often and knew just what the fix was – a Frosty! Wendy’s knows that when fans are craving a sweet treat, they deserve to have a reliable and delicious option,” said the company press release. “To make sure that fans with a sweet tooth are covered, Wendy’s is mobilizing to bring consumers Frosty treats in their times of greatest need.”
