There is yet another call for AI research and development to be more strictly regulated. The concern? Without extensive regulation, it could speed up the disappearance of some lesser-known languages.
LISTEN:
Viorica Marian, with Northwestern University, tells KNX News that the proliferation of models like ChatGPT could leave us with only 20 dominant languages out of the more than 7,000 currently existing.
Her concern is that these "large languages" are driving out lesser-used ones at a rate of nine per year without the help of AI, as a result of increased globalization and migration.
For AI models to be successful, they need large amounts of data. "For languages that don't have a recent database or that have only a very small database to be trained on - it just won't be used as much," Viorica says.
She's worried that our thinking could change if reality is filtered through a more limited amount of languages, and if a language dies, a culture could also die.
