“NCIS” fans will be saying aloha to a new edition of the popular police procedural television franchise.
CBS has ordered the launch of a new spinoff entitled “NCIS: Hawaii” set in the 50th state and centered around a female lead, reported Deadline.
The network announced the news in conjunction with renewing “NCIS: LA” for a 13th season.
"We have officially renewed @NCISLA and ordered #NCISHawaii for the 2021-22 broadcast season. Get ready!" read the tweet from the official CBS account.
While no casting for “NCIS: Hawaii'' has been disclosed, it will be the first series in the franchise to be headlined by a woman.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will follow the first female special agent running NCIS Pearl Harbor “as she and her team balance duty to family and country while investigating cases involving military personnel, national security and the secrets of the island.”
The news comes as “NCIS: New Orleans” is wrapping up its run after seven seasons and after original series “NCIS” was recently given a go-ahead for a 19th season.
“NCIS” launched in 2003 as a spinoff of “JAG” with Mark Harmon as the series lead.
In 2009, “NCIS:LA” premiered with Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J as co-headliners. “NCIS: New Orleans” arrived in 2014 lead by “Quantum Leap” star Scott Bakula.
With “New Orleans” ending on May 16th and “Hawaii” expected to premiere in the fall, CBS will continue to have three “NCIS” shows on the air simultaneously.
For those that may now know or remember, NCIS stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
