UC system braces for disruption as 6,000 lecturers plan walkout this week

College students across the state will face empty classrooms and lecture halls on Wednesday as more than 6,000 University of California lectureres plan to walk off the job this week.

Lecturers a non-tenured faculty that teach roughly half of all undergraduate classes across the UC system. They have been locked in a two-and-a-half-year negotiation with UC leadership over work conditions, pay, and high turnover. Parties reached an impasse in June after a collective contract expired in January of last year.

Represented by the American Federation of Teachers, they are accusing the UC administration of bad-faith bargaining on issues including compensation for remote instruction, paid family leave, and a spate of recent layoffs at UC Davis.

UC has issued a statement denying that characterization, calling the strike "grossly unfair to our students."

Lecturers at all UC campuses except UC San Francisco, which is primarily a medical and graduate research school, are expected to participate.
