More than 600,000 California residents who were eligible for the Middle Class Tax Refund have not touched the money, according to multiple reports.
Data from the California Franchise Tax Board found that as of April 2024, 7.2 million people received the money via direct deposit while 9.6 million received the money via a debit card. Of the cards that were issued, only 90% were activated.
The California Franchise Tax started issuing the payments between October 2022 and January 2023.
The Middle Class Tax refund was designed to provide inflation relief for Californians. Those who qualified had to have filed their 2020 tax return by October 15, 2021, and had to have an income under $500,001.
The payments ranged from $200 to $1,050, according to CPA Practice Advisor.
