And experts warn fires could be even more destructive this year.

For those who live in high fire-risk areas, power companies are urging them to prepare ahead, such as getting a back-up battery.

And if you or your family member relies on power for medical devices during the COVID pandemic, a back-up battery could be a life-saver.

As we enter the fire season, Southern California Edison is providing free, portable backup batteries for eligible customers.

SoCal Edison's Reggie Kumar says, to be eligible, you have to live in a high fire-risk area and proof that you rely on a critical medical device, such as a respirator or a motorized wheelchair.
