Bay Area mother sentenced to prison for participation in Jan. 6 riot

A Bay Area woman has been sentenced to a month and a half behind bars for her participation in the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot.

Mariposa Castro, a mother from Gilroy, crawled through a broken window of the Capitol Building during the infamous attack, stating in a live stream posted to Facebook, "We're in! We're inside the Capitol house. We got inside the Capitol."

Castro was sentenced to 45 days in prison on Wednesday after facing numerous charges following the insurrection including, entering and remaining in a restricted building, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building, violent entry and disorderly conduct in a Capitol Building and parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol Building.

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton also imposed a $5,000 fine, as the attack "totally undermined" the peaceful transfer of power, NBC News reported.

"I've been reading a couple books about how civil war starts, and so much of history is repeating itself in our country," Walton said during Castro's sentencing, the station wrote.

After Castro and other rioters were forced from the grounds on Jan. 6, she posted a statement to Facebook, addressing the actions of that day.

"As Trump says, 'the best is yet to come,'" she wrote. "It was a pretty long one. We showed them. We showed them all. Showed this one. War just started."

According to court documents, Castro admitted in November that she recorded herself climbing into the building and acknowledged that she did not have permission.

Prosecutors sought 60 days of imprisonment and a $500 restitution charge for the Bay Area mother due to her "eagerness" to join the assault on the United States Capitol.

Castro's attorney said her client "got caught up in the moment, was influenced by others and had a lapse of judgement and said things that were uncharacteristic of her" while at the riot.
