Camping is picking back up in California.

California State Parks and the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife are both allowing camping to resume on their lands after Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted the state’s regional stay-at-home order.

The state parks system, which includes popular facilities like Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur and the Henry Cowell Redwoods, began reopening campsites to people with existing reservations on January 28 and will begin allowing new reservations in a phased approach.

But the reopening is limited. Some facilities within parks and wildlife areas may be closed and capacity will be limited to allow for social distancing, and some parks are also closed for other reasons including wildfire damage.

Most of California is still at the state’s highest level of risk according to the reopening tier system, and a travel advisory asking people to avoid non-essential travel of more than 120 miles is still in place.

Additionally, many Bay Area counties are asking people to quarantine after traveling outside the area.
