Oakland police have recovered a car "similar" to the description of a vehicle believed to be involved in the fatal shooting of a former longtime Bay Area police officer was last month.
Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong told reporters on Monday at a press conference in East Oakland that the department is "analyzing everything within" the car, which Armstrong said looked like one police said is connected to Kevin Nishita’s death last month.
Nishita was shot while working as a security guard for a KRON reporter on assignment in the city. He died at an Oakland hospital less than a week later.
"We are making progress in this investigation," Armstrong said Monday at a press conference in East Oakland. "We have recovered a vehicle similar to the description of the vehicle that we are looking for, and we are analyzing everything within that vehicle."
An Oakland police spokesperson told KCBS Radio in an email the car was found on Saturday.
Police have not identified any suspects. Neither Armstrong nor the spokesperson specified how the car is believed to be connected to the shooting, where it was obtained and what police must find in order to determine the vehicle is linked.
The spokesperson wouldn't answer those questions, telling KCBS Radio the department is "not releasing any additional details at this time" because officers are actively investigating.
Nishita worked for the department, and a number of others within the Bay Area, before retiring and working in private security. Oakland police are offering $38,500 for information leading to an arrest.
