SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KNX) – A new program by the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department allows residents to receive free HIV self-test kits for those who request them.

“The most common STD symptom is no symptom at all, so getting tested is one of the most important things an individual can do for their health and the health of their partners,” Public Health Department STD/HIV Controller and Assistant Health Officer Dr. Sarah Rudman said in a press release by the county.

In order to get the kits, those who “live or work in the County, are 17 years of age or older and identify as a member of a population highly impacted by HIV, such as men who have sex with men, LGBTQ+, Hispanic/Latinx, or African American/Black are eligible to receive a self-test kit in the mail,” the county said.

$20,000 of state funding from the California Department of Public Health covers the cost of the test. Health insurance is required to cover the tests per a new state law that went into effect in January.
