Highway 1 at Rat Creek, on Mile Marker 30, south of Esalen, along the Big Sur coast, washed completely out on Thursday night, and as of now there is no expected timeline for repairing it.

Highway 1 in Big Sur will remain closed to all thru traffic until further notice, according to Caltrans.
Crews will begin to assess the damage, cleanup and repairs Friday.

Caltrans says an emergency contractor is on board.

According to Captain Kyle Foster, "State Route 1 between MPM 40 and the San Luis Obispo county line continues to be impacted by inclement weather, debris flow, flooding, and slides. This area is closed to the public. Remain clear of the area and plan alternate routes. Please continue to exercise extreme caution on rural roads, especially at night. Please see CALTRANS website for up-to-date information on road closures."
