Applicants to the University of California system had a big scare Sunday night as the website stopped working just before the deadline for Fall 2021 applications.
This was the situation Gwenly Carrel had been trying to avoid.
"I’ve always stressed, make sure that if you have a due deadline, that you back that up by a week," she told KCBS Radio.
She’s the college and career center director at Piedmont High School. Carrel said most of her students followed her direction, but still had several emails Monday morning. "(I’m) having trouble getting onto the site," Carrel said of the emails.
The deadline to submit applications to all UC schools was supposed to be 11:59 p.m. Sunday. But, at some point in the evening, many students were having trouble submitting, causing the university to issue a rare last-minute extension.
"Now there is a sigh of relief," Carrel explained.
In a statement to KCBS Radio, UC officials said: "The outage stemmed from an issue with one of our servers. In the meantime, we have taken additional measures to ensure the system performs well while continuing to closely monitor it."
The deadline has been extended until Friday.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, UC officials have eased certain requirements for admission. That includes suspending standardized test requirements for potential freshman students.
