ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - An Arlington police officer shot a woman Thursday afternoon when he was trying to hit an aggressive dog.
Police, Arlington Fire and paramedics responded to a 911 call about a woman passed out north of the Lamar Boulevard-Collins Street intersection about 5:15.
The caller directed police to the spot where the woman was lying down. An officer spotted the woman in the grass behind a business.
A dog was nearby. When the officer called out to the woman to see if she was okay, police say the dog started running at the officer and barking.
The officer fired his gun several times at the dog, but he hit the woman. Margarita Brooks, 30, died at the hospital. The Arlington Fire Department confirmed later Friday that she is the daughter of an Arlington Fire Captain.
Arlington Police say the officer's body camera caught the entire exchange. They say they will release the video when they no longer need it as part of the investigation.
Police do not know why Brooks was passed out in the grass.
