ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - Arlington plans to honor the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks in a very special way this year.
The city plans to turn Veterans Park into a Field of Honor to remember those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, along with the first responders who hurried to help that day, many giving their own lives in the line of duty. More than 1,000 American flags will be planted in the park, and organizers of the tribute hope community involvement will drive the number of flags much higher.
For $40, anyone can purchase a flag that will be added to the display. After the tribute is disassembled, the buyer can pick up their flag, have it shipped to someone or donate the flag to be used another year.
Along with the Patriot Day observance on Sept. 11, the Arlington tribute is also a "thank you" to all first responders, military veterans and active-duty service members. Anyone purchasing a flag for the Field of Honor can have it installed in someone's honor. The information of the honoree will be included on the flag.
The city is also looking for volunteers to assemble the flags on Aug. 24, and for help in installing them in Veterans Park on Sept. 6.
The Field of Honor display will officially open on Sept. 11. A closing ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 14.
Proceeds raised from flag sales benefits the nonprofit Arlington Veterans Park Foundation.
