SOUTHLAKE (KRLD) - The Carroll ISD has issued a public statement after another video circulated on social media of teens using the "n-word".
The district held a series of meetings and adopted new policies, including the creation of a diversity training program, after a similar video circulated online last fall.
"Because of the disruption to the educational environment, our campus administrators have already taken steps to consistently apply the Student Code of Conduct to the extent allowable under the law," the district said in a written statement. The punishment under the Student Code of Conduct could range from a required parent meeting to suspension. According to the district's written statement, "behavior that involves derogatory speech that targets individuals or groups of individuals for their ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation or disabilities will not be tolerated in Carroll ISD."
Southlake Mayor Laura Hill has also posted a statement on her Facebook account addressing the issue. It includes a call for parents to take more responsibility for shaping their kids' values.
"I don't care if you make $50,000 a year or $500,000 you are perfectly capable of raising an entitled child who thinks everything that comes out of their mouth is their right to say," the Mayor wrote. "We can not expect the School District to raise our kids, teach them morals, ethics, common decency and on top of that academics. There is NO place for racism, exclusion or discrimination of any kind, anywhere. Parents, get on the boat or we do the future a huge disservice."
