DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The cities of Dallas and Fort Worth are offering a chance for people with unpaid citations to get warrants forgiven without paying a fee.
Starting Saturday, February 9, Dallas will partner with the North Texas Food Bank on a "warrant forgiveness" program. People with outstanding citations for Class C misdemeanors can bring three canned goods to a court location to have their warrant forgiven without paying a $50 fee.
"It's a win-win for everyone," says City Marshal Gary Lindsey. "It's an opportunity for the defendants to come in and resolve their issues with the city court, and it's an opportunity to provide back to the communities."
The program in Dallas runs through Wednesday, February 13.
While Dallas launches its program Saturday, Fort Worth started a "safe harbor" program Monday that will run through March 2. Anyone with an outstanding citation in Fort Worth can present documentation to city court and receive a reduction in their fine or community service.
Fort Worth is setting up a mobile court for people to take action on their cases. The city is also adding service hours at the municipal courts building at 1000 Throckmorton Street. The building will be open 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 17 and 24th.
