DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall says violent criminals should take note. Law enforcement is coming to an area near you.
Chief Hall was joined by officials from several other agencies Friday, as they announced a joint partnership to tackle the recent spike in violent crime in Dallas.
The crime-fighting coalition includes Dallas PD, the Dallas County Sheriff's Office, Dallas County District Attorney's Office, the U.S. Attorney and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
On Friday, Gov. Greg Abbott approved Hall's request for help from the state. It means DPS will deploy additional troopers and other personnel on the streets of Dallas.
Chief Hall said there will be heightened enforcement in eight targeted areas in Dallas. "You'll see foot patrols, you'll see mounted. There will be traffic enforcement. You'll see more narcotics enforcement. Our gang units will be out," she said.
Officials from the various agencies sounded a common theme during the news conference, calling on the community to help authorities bring the recent crime wave under control. Sheriff Marian Brown made a direct appeal to residents. She said, "Stand with us."
Chief Hall expressed gratitude to Gov. Abbott for his cooperation in the effort. She cited Houston and San Antonio as recent examples where additional help from the state paid dividends for local communities experiencing similar issues.
Dallas reported 41 homicides in May, the highest monthly total since the 1990s.
