FRISCO (1080 KRLD) - The Frisco ISD is being sued over the way it elects school trustees.

The lawsuit claims the district is violating the Voting Rights Act.

The federal lawsuit claims Frisco's current at large system basically discriminates against minorities, Asian Americans in particular.

Currently all 6 board members are elected at large, meaning voters from the entire district vote for trustees.

The suit wants voters to choose candidates from individual districts, arguing single district elections better represent  Frisco's growing population.

Right now all 6 board member are white but less than half of the people who live in the district are white.  Reports say 29 % are Asian Americans, 13 % are Hispanic and 11 % are black.

Earlier this year the Richardson ISD settled a similar lawsuit and now 5 of the district  7 trustees will be elected from single districts.
