SAN ANTONIO (1080 KRLD) - A federal court in San Antonio is considering whether Texas should be able to redraw voting maps without federal supervision

Luis Vera with the League of United Latin American Cities says the Supreme high court in 2011 found intentional discrimination on the part of Texas in re-drawing its congressional districts. "Texas has a bad history.  Everytime it makes a chance its done strictly for discriminatory purpose to hurt minorities, whether they're black or brown or whatever.  It doesn't matter."

He says the 2020 census is already being taken and maps will be redrawn again and they'll be back in court. "We're in the court every time Texas makes changes.  Every state in the country redraws lines every ten years.  Texas does it three times during that ten year period."

Last year the Supreme Court largely upheld Texas' current congressional and legislative districts.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office says that ruling should absolve the state from needing federal oversight.
