HOUSTON (KRLD) - Baylor St. Luke's hospital in Houston is vowing to make changes following the death of an elderly woman.
A review from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services found that at the end of November, a 75-year old was given the wrong blood type.
She had been mistaken for a patient who had been in the same room before her. This came three days after another woman nearly got the wrong blood type, but the lab caught the mistake.
The report found staff made over 100 errors in labeling blood during a four-month span.
In a letter posted on the hospital's web site, St. Luke's CEO Doug Lawson called the government's findings "deeply disappointing."
He has promised to add new safeguards against improperly labeled blood specimens and broad-based training for doctors, nurses and technicians on the policies and improved procedures.
