DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Coyote sightings have risen the past few weeks in all University Park neighborhoods.  This increased activity is due in part to the early winter mating season.

Steve Mace with the city says coyotes are common place in the area. "We have Turtle Creek that winds in and through all of our neighborhoods. So coyotes like to follow the streams as they go about their travels," he says.

He urges anyone to report a coyote if they see one, regardless of the time of day, by calling UPPD dispatch using the non-emergency number 214-363-3000.  The City will keep a list of the sightings, and will forward a compilation of locations to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for possible trapping efforts.

They are urging residents not intentionally feed a coyote. Since they prefer to find easy meals, they are also attracted to:

  • Dog and cat food that is left outside
  • Rotting fruit under trees
  • Bird seed on the ground
  • Trash that is accessible due to garbage containers that are not properly secured

It is also not a good idea to leave small pets outside overnight.

Mace says more residents seem to be aware of coyotes, since several joggers were attacked by the animals in Frisco late last year.
