DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A security guard shot and killed a robbery suspect early Tuesday at an Apple store in Uptown Dallas.

Dallas Police say a construction crew was working at the store near Knox and McKinney about 2:30 a.m. when the suspect tried to get into the store through the back.

A security guard was working at the entrance, and police say another person was nearby.

"According to their testimony, the suspect entered the rear of the building wearing body armor and armed with an assault rife in an attempt to commit a robbery," says Sgt. Warren Mitchell.

Mitchell says the suspect tried to disarm the security guard, but the guard pulled his gun and shot the suspect. The suspect collapsed in the alley behind the store and died at the hospital.

Mitchell says the security guard is a retired Dallas police officer.

"We're still interviewing him and interviewing witnesses, so this is an ongoing investigation," he says. "We're looking at surveillance cameras in the area to see if there were any waiting vehicles in the area or things like that."

No one else was hurt. No other businesses were affected.
